USA DANCE LOS ANGELES NEWSLETTER -

September 2005 Chapter News
USA Dance Los Angeles (f/k/a USABDA)
www.usadance-la.org
Send queries or comments to: alexandra@ombailamos.com

Hello Dancers,

NEXT CHAPTER DANCE: SEPTEMBER 16, 2005, the kickoff day of National Ballroom Dance Week!

Instead of a lesson, this time ? in honor of National Ballroom Dance Week ? there will be a special presentation by members of the chapter Outreach team. This is your chance to see how your chapter is promoting ballroom dancing to local schools, senior residences, and other public venues. In addition, we have invited a presentation by members of the Caltech Ballroom Club?s DanceSport team! There will also be new and improved mixer dances throughout the evening.

Special theme for the September 16 dance: End-of-Summer Luau! Suggested to wear: gentlemen, white, khaki, or denim pants and Hawaiian shirts; ladies, bright-colored t-shirts or tank tops with skirts or Capri pants. Doors will open at 7:30. Dancing will continue to 11:00. Public admission, $12; USA Dance members and Dance Buddies, $10; Collegiate dancers, $5. Prize to the Most Hawaiian costume (all in attendance are eligible). We will be taking photos for the chapter website, www.usadance-la.org.

Time and Place: 7:30, Culver City Masonic Hall, 9635 Venice Boulevard, Culver City 90232. The hall is on the NORTH side of Venice Blvd; parking is available on Venice and neighboring streets, as well as in two public decks located in the first block of Watseka and Cardiff, the two streets bracketing the 9600 block, on the SOUTH side of Venice Blvd. We request that the spaces directly in front of the Masonic Hall be reserved for volunteers.

From the 10 Freeway, exit Robertson south and turn right on Venice. From the 405, exit Venice Blvd east (or north, however they have it labeled). The Hare Krishna temple is on the northwest side of the 9600 block and is a good landmark.

REMAINING CHAPTER DANCES: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28 ?MASQUERADE BALL!? AND FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18, WITH SPECIAL EVENTS FOR COMPETITORS!

For our last dance of the year, we plan a night of special showcases by amateur competitors, who will be offered a free private critique by a panel of local professionals. Because this event will fall between the California State Amateur DanceSport Championships (San Jose, Nov. 12) and the California Star Ball (Costa Mesa, Nov. 25-27), we expect many local competitors will have routines prepared. We urge competitors who would like to come and receive a critique to let us know in advance so that we can schedule the evening for the optimum combination of fun showcases and social dancing. You need not be chapter members, although we would be most gratified if you did join USA Dance!

NOTE TO NEW LISTMEMBERS

Our chapter welcomes all dancers and we charge no chapter dues. To join USA Dance and help support partner dancing, you can download or request by mail a membership form at www.usabda.org. We appreciate all listmembers specifying our chapter number, 4031, when signing up for membership!

FLEXIBILITY FOR DANCERS

Ballroom dancing does not require the exaggerated turnout or the acrobatic extensions of ballet. However, working on your flexibility can have enormous benefits not only for your dancing, but for your everyday life. This month and November, I will discuss certain beneficial exercises adapted from my own practice.

DISCLAIMER #1: I am not a certified personal trainer, yoga instructor, or ballet teacher. The descriptions given below are as clear as I can make them, and reflect what has worked for me - but may read differently than those given in fitness books or classes conducted by professionals. All readers are strongly urged to consult a fitness professional for ANY questions concerning this material.

DISCLAIMER #2: The information below concerning injuries should not be considered a substitute for professional medical advice. If you are hurting, see a doctor.

DISCLAIMER #3: It is possible to injure yourself by stretching if your body is improperly or inadequately supported while in motion. If you have any doubts about your understanding of the movements described below, do not attempt them unsupervised.

DISCLAIMER #4: USA Dance, its officers, and our volunteers assume no responsibility for injuries sustained by its members or by non-members who receive USA Dance communications. EXERCISE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Flexibility is not just about being able to touch your toes. All the structures of the body, with the exception perhaps of the nose and ears, are assembled in a way that allows for movement. Like other capabilities, flexibility is ?use-it-or-lose-it.? Many workers today spend their entire working lives sitting in a chair. Consequently, the hip muscles become shortened in front of the body, while they are constantly extended in the back. This increases the likelihood of lower-back strain and injury at the same time it increases lower-abdominal weakness and (let?s face it) flab. Commonly, the pectoral muscles also become shortened while those of the upper back become extended and weakened, resulting in hunched-over posture, loss of upper-body strength, and neck strain.

These inactivity-promoted physical ills can be relieved and even reversed by a good stretching program, which will:
activate the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves; and

include moves that activate the body through different planes. Forward and backward stretches should be combined with sideways and twisting stretches to obtain the full benefit. It is essential to combine flexibility exercises with strength-building exercises in order to fully realize the body?s potential and ward off injury.

QUICK ANATOMY LESSON

Ligaments are the tough, relatively inelastic soft tissue connections from bone to bone. ?Popping? of joints is typically caused by ligaments passing over bony protrusions. Such a sensation should not be cause for alarm unless accompanied by pain. Flexibility of the ligaments permits full range of motion in the joints; excessive flexibility can result in dislocation.

Tendons are the rubbery, relatively elastic soft tissue connections from muscle to bone. Tendons allow muscles to extend and contract on demand, and help control the speed and stability of movements.

Working to maintain flexibility and strengthen the muscles surrounding the joints can help prevent injuries. Anyone familiar with ballet knows of the daily class most professional dancers take. This class, a series of stretching and strengthening movements, is designed to keep the dancers? bodies both limber and strong enough to sustain the demanding positions and movements of ballet. A daily practice of some kind is advisable for anyone who dances regularly.

INJURIES

Traumatic overextension of one or more ligaments is commonly known as a sprain and is a serious injury requiring from weeks to months to heal. Certain ligaments such as the ACL ? anterior cruciate ligament, located at the center of the knee joint ? are sites of common sports injuries. A sprained, torn, or detached ligament usually results in instability of the affected joint but may not cause much pain after the initial injury. Nevertheless, severe joint injuries require a doctor?s prompt attention. The joint should be firmly supported while healing and progress should be professionally monitored. In some cases, surgery may be required.

Traumatic overextension of one or more tendons is commonly known as a strain, sometimes miscalled a pulled muscle, and is an injury requiring up to several weeks to heal. Certain tendons such as the Achilles ? the large tendon at the back of the ankle ? have been known to tear or detach under extreme stress. Such an event is a severe injury requiring prompt medical attention and possibly surgery. Most tendon injuries, however, are relatively minor and require no more than rest and a cold pack for relief. Full activity in the injured area should not be resumed as long as noticeable pain persists.

Muscles themselves can also be injured through overstress. A ?pulled? muscle is actually torn on the cellular level. Tiny tears in the muscle tissue can create considerable discomfort and loss of full function. Do not try to ?work through it.? Rest the injury. A more severe muscle tear can sometimes be seen through the skin, as a visible deformity, and should be treated urgently.

FIVE BASIC EXERCISES, PLUS ONE

Additional exercises will be described in the November newsletter. Those described below are part of a series which can be executed in less than fifteen minutes, without any equipment. These five exercises primarily stretch and strengthen the back, shoulders, hips, and legs.

IMPORTANT: Breathe normally while performing all movements to keep your mind and body relaxed.

Standing Forward Bend: Stand with feet together and parallel, shoulders back, head level, lower abdominal muscles (below the navel) engaged to support the lower back; hands together (palm to palm) at your sternum. Bend the knees, keeping the back straight, while scooping hands down and then out straight in front of you; straighten knees while continuing movement of the joined hands up and over your head. Reach and look up to the sky, arms beside your ears, hands together. Separate hands and bring arms down to your sides, pressing through the air as if rising through water. As your hands reach your hips, begin to bend - from the hips, not the waist - until your hands touch the floor. If necessary, bend your knees again, keeping your lower belly against your upper thighs. Breathe in while holding the position, then breathe out and roll up through your spine until standing straight again. The fullest expression of this stretch will bring your entire torso flat against your legs. Do not attempt this full expression without supervision.

Runner?s Stretch: Perform the Standing Forward Bend to the point where your hands touch the floor. Lift your head to look straight ahead of you, not at the floor, and bend your left knee to a right angle while skimming your right foot straight out behind you. Keep the left knee directly over the ankle and the lower belly against your upper thigh, with both hands flat on the floor at shoulder width. Send your weight through your heel to the floor. Breathe out and in while holding this position. Bring the right foot back under you in a crouching position. Press into your right foot, bringing the knee up until it is at a right angle and directly over the ankle, while skimming your left foot straight out behind you. Breathe out and in while holding this position. Bring the left foot back under you, then rise through the legs and roll up through your spine until standing straight again. The fullest expression of this stretch will create a straight diagonal line from the foot of your extended leg through to your bent, forward knee. Do not attempt this full expression unless you are able to touch your toes with straight (not locked) knees. IMPORTANT: Keep your pelvis squared to the floor as you extend your legs. Do not rotate the hip in order to extend further.

Plank Pose: Perform the Runner?s Stretch to the point where one leg is fully extended behind you. Breathe out and transfer your weight to your hands and extend the other leg straight behind you. Breathe in and rotate your shoulders back so that your shoulder blades are aimed at your ?back pockets;? press out through your heels and lower your hips to form a straight line from shoulders to heels. Breathe out and in, then breathe out and bring one foot forward and continue as in the Runner?s Stretch. IMPORTANT: Any time your hips are suspended horizontally, you must support your lower back by engaging the lower abdominal muscles and those of your upper thighs. Imagine drawing the navel up to the spine, and keep your thigh bones rotated out: your knees should be together and your heels must be touching, not flopping open. Do not attempt the Plank Pose unsupervised if you are unsure how to engage these muscles.

Modified Downward Dog Pose: Perform the Standing Forward Bend to the point where your hands touch the floor. Walk your hands forward until your body forms a triangle from heels to hips to hands. You may need to rise up onto your toes a bit to relieve the intense stretch of the Achilles tendon. Support your lower back; adjust your shoulders so that your shoulder blades are aimed at your ?back pockets.? Look at the floor and breathe in and out, then bend your knees, drawing your hands back toward your feet. Breathe out as you straighten up. IMPORTANT: Do not press hard into your shoulders to achieve a straight line in the upper back.

Child?s Pose Variation: Perform the Plank Pose to the point where both legs are fully extended behind you. Breathe out and drop both knees ? gently! ? to the floor, then sit back on your heels, keeping your hands on the floor ahead of you, and releasing your toes from the floor so that you rest on the top of your feet. Fold your lower belly against your thighs; stretch your arms alternately, pulling gently to elongate each side of your torso. Breathe in and sit up on your folded legs, lower abs engaged to flatten your lower back, shoulder blades aimed at your ?back pockets,? head level, hands resting loosely on your thighs. IMPORTANT: You may need to place a rolled-up towel on top of your ankles until your knees become flexible enough to sit comfortably in this pose.

Advanced Frog Squat Forward Bend: DO NOT ATTEMPT until you can comfortably complete the Forward Bend and Child?s Pose as described above, without props. Perform the Forward Bend to the point where your hands are flat on the floor. Move your feet to shoulder width, and rock back slightly on your heels to turn your toes out, forming a right angle with your feet. Keeping your lower belly against your thighs, squat down until legs are fully folded, weight going down through your heels. Rise up through the legs, keeping the belly to the upper thighs, and repeat up to ten times. This exercise will quickly strengthen all major muscles of the thighs; the hands on the floor provide stability.

IMPORTANT: Each time you squat down, breathe out and look straight ahead at a wall; each time you straighten your legs, breathe in and look at your knees. This will help you relax and keep your neck neutral.

These movements have cumulative effects and you should not seek to create the full expression of any pose until well practiced.

TIPS FOR SUPPORT

Rotating the thighbones out is a good way to immediately tighten the muscles of the buttocks. It also automatically brings the pelvis into a level orientation, rather than tipped down in front. Combine the outward rotation of the thighs with engagement of the lower abdominals, and you have a well-supported core. To achieve outward rotation of the thighs, it is not necessary to move your feet or knees at all. Stand with feet parallel and merely send the mental message to turn out your feet. You should feel your thighbones turn outward inside your hip sockets. You should also feel the back of your pelvis lower, and the ?saddlebag? area lift. This is because that mental message engages not the large muscles of the thighs, but a complex of tiny muscles deep inside the pelvic and sacral complex. Practice standing this way and become mindful of supporting your core.

A loose belly is a guarantee of lower-back weakness. While it is not necessary for health or fitness to have a fat-free belly, it is advisable to have strong abdominal muscles and to consciously engage them so as to support the lumbar spine, a common site of pain and injury. At random during the day, give some thought to your position. If you are standing on one foot with your hip cocked, place your weight on both feet and consciously pull your navel in toward your spine. If sitting at an angle in your chair, straighten up, aim your shoulder blades at your ?back pockets,? and put your head level. You do not need to ?suck in your gut? to the point of a concave belly; that will only cause you to hold your breath. Breathe normally while you think of pulling the drawstring on your belly pouch. That drawstring holds a lot of essentials neatly inside your abdominal cavity and keeps them all from hanging off your spine.

Additional exercises will be described in the November newsletter. If you found this information helpful and would like to see additional features on fitness issues for dancers, or if you would be interested in attending a group class on a daily routine for dancers, please write to Alexandra.

COMPETITION DANCING

Anyone involved in competition (participating or spectating) will find the USA DanceSport rule book very informative. If you are not yet a member of USA Dance, and would like a copy of the rule book, you may request a copy as a .pdf document from me via email. We can provide hard copies by mail if you provide us with a check for $5 made out to USA Dance, to cover the copying and postage expenses.

A thousand thanks to all who came to support the dinner dance at the Hacienda Hotel on Nov.4. A special thanks to all who worked hard to make this an enjoyable event. It was unfortunate that some were not able to attend due to the event being sold out. It would have been too uncomfortable to allow more dancers on the floor. We will make the announcement on the annual Spring Dance as soon as we have the details. We strongly encourage everyone to purchase tickets as early as possible.

February 25, 2006,The Fort MacArthur Museum and Maxwell DeMille present a fantastic recreation of the Great Los Angeles Air Raid of 1942. On the night and early morning of February 24 and 25, 1942, a singular event unfolded in the skies over Southern California ? the continental United States was attacked by an enemy... or was it? The reports of this vary, from a squadron of Japanese bombers to a weather balloon and even alien
spacecraft! We do know that *something* happened... too many people witnessed the event to dispute that fact, but what really happened? Imagine you are attending an Officers' Ball at the Military Base that protects the Los Angeles Harbor. Suddenly the '40s dance band is interrupted by alarming
news of approaching enemy aircraft. The lights go dark, sirens blare, mighty searchlights scan the skies. Anti-aircraft artillery fires, the sound of fighter planes buzz overhead, then you see it... or do you? Features Mora's Modern Swintet (1940's dance band). Time: 6-10PM. Delicious food and drinks. Admission:$15. Location, Fort Arthur Museum 3601 S. Gaffey, San
Pedro. For more information call: 310-548-2631 or visit: www.fortmac.org or visit http://maxwelldemille.com/air-raid.asp
